Cantine Valpane
2013 Euli Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese
Piedmont, Italy
$16 per bottle | $172.80 per case

Piedmont’s three best known red grapes – Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto are justifiably famous. But if the much-lauded Barbera specialist, Cantine Valpane, is featuring a Grignolino, that means it’s time to give this underappreciated grape some serious attention. After a dizzying nose of pure, soaring wild cherry and brown spice it’s hard to believe that this wine tastes even better. Amazingly it does, taking that pristine cherry and spice and roughing it up with tannic brawn and some savory, meaty depth, all of it echoing endlessly on a cheerful, refreshing finish. It's impossible to not love, with the only downside being that with only five acres planted, importer Kermit Lynch couldn't have brought too much of this Grignolino into the country. Pinot Noir and Northern Rhône Syrah fans should take note (and a case or so) to enjoy it lightly chilled as a cocktail wine with lighter picnic foods or with anything off the grill. - Ryan Stotz, Store Manager, H&F Bottle Shop
