2008 Biferno Riserva
$13 per bottle | $140.40 per case
We have received numerous requests for Casa Contini's Biferno Riserva since we last featured it as our Wine of the Week; therefore, it’s back by popular demand and is this week’s featured wine. If you didn't get an opportunity to try it the last time around, Assistant Store Manager Ryan Stotz notes "blackberry, pepper, walnut, toasted bread, and any number of other aromas typical of wines from this part of Italy." Combine all of that with the dark berries, ripe cherries, and spice noted on the palate and, well, this WOW should not be missed.
This superb Italian blend is made from 85% Montepulciano and 15% Aglianico, an underrated grape varietal that provides dark fruit flavors, tannin, and a good amount of acidity. Eighteen months spent in large, neutral Slavonian oak barrels aid in extracting additional tannin to bring the ripe Montepulciano into perfect balance. Unlike many Southern Italian wines that are big and overripe with stingingly high alcohol, this Biferno Riserva is lighter in body but commands your attention from first sniff. Pair it alongside grilled sausage, chicken, or pork.
