2012 Red Cosecha
Rioja Alta, Spain

While modernization saved Spain's wine industry in many ways, among the casualties were traditional Rioja producers. There are arguably only three left, and our Wine of the Week comes from the one that's seldom seen: Señorio de P. Peciña. Holding fast to the idea that Rioja is more about character and complexity than sweetness and oak, the wines display that dusty, rugged swagger that defines the region. Fresh, dark berries and plums have a slight balsamic quality that matches the hearty texture and gives context to the savory, leathery, untamed Rioja undertones. As with most Rioja, the rarer the grilled red meat the better the pairing, but its soft and fruity nature makes for an unexpectedly worthy companion to spicy foods, like Korean barbecue and chili as well. - Ryan Stotz,  Assistant Store Manager, H&F Bottle Shop
