Proprietor Erik Vonk has been honing his craft for the past 15 years to finally create a historical style of rum for his Georgia-based Richland Rum that would have once been produced by sugar cane farmers for their own personal consumption. While much of the rum produced today is made from molasses, Richland Rum is hand crafted using pure cane syrup, including a portion made from sugar cane grown at Vonk's "Vennebroeck" estate, located a mere seven miles South of the distillery. The syrup is distilled with water from the Georgia aqueduct in copper stills and the "hearts" are separated and aged in new, American white oak barrels for 18 to 24 months. This fine, sipping rum begins with classic caramel and vanilla aromas wafting from the glass that carry to the palate. The cane syrup lends complex vegetal characteristics followed by dark notes of chocolate, figs and tobacco.
